What it means

Shown as a gear wheel with an exclamation mark, usually amber, this light means the transmission control module has detected a fault and may put the transmission in limp mode, holding one gear or a few gears to protect it. The symbol varies by make, and some cars show a text message instead. A brief glow at key-on that then goes out is normal.

The transmission will not shift or stays in second or third gear (limp mode).
Delayed or harsh shifts.
Engine speed rises without a matching increase in road speed (slipping).
A transmission fault message, sometimes with the check engine light.

Low, old or leaking transmission fluid.
Faulty speed sensors, fluid temperature sensor or gear range switch.
Faulty shift or pressure control solenoids or their wiring.
Weak battery or low voltage confusing the control module.
Internal wear in the clutches, valve body or torque converter.
Faulty transmission control module (TCM) or one needing a software update.

How to diagnose5

Note the message on the display, when the light came on, and how the shifting changed.
Stop in a safe place, switch off for a few minutes and restart; the system may recover for a while, but the fault stays stored.
Look for fluid leaks under the car, and check the level if your car has an owner-usable dipstick.
At a workshop: read transmission codes with a scan tool that supports the TCM, and check the fluid color and smell.
Test the sensors, solenoids and wiring, then road test while watching live data.

How to fix6

Top up with the fluid the manufacturer specifies and fix any leak.
Charge or replace the battery and repair any damaged connector or wire.
Replace the faulty sensor or gear range switch.
Replace the solenoid or solenoid pack, or update the control module software.
Repair the valve body or rebuild the transmission if internal wear is confirmed.
Clear codes and run a shift relearn if needed, then road test and confirm the light stays off.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive to the workshop?

Usually yes, a short distance and gently in limp mode. If there is heavy slipping, a burning smell or loud noises, stop and call a tow truck.

How is it different from the transmission temperature light?

The temperature light means the fluid is too hot and you must stop to let it cool; this light means a general fault detected by the control module.

The light went out after a restart. Is the problem gone?

Not necessarily. The code usually stays stored and the light may return. Have the codes read before the fault gets worse.
