What it means

The transmission range sensor tells the computer where the gear selector is: park, reverse, neutral or drive. The computer has seen an incorrect or implausible signal from this circuit, so it can no longer be sure which position is selected.

Engine will not crank in park or neutral, or cranks in another position.
Gear indicator on the dash does not match the selector or goes blank.
Reverse lights do not work or come on at the wrong time.
Harsh shifts or the transmission going into limp mode.

Corroded or loose sensor connector.
Open or shorted sensor wiring.

How to diagnose5

Watch the selector position reading on a scan tool while moving the lever through every position, and confirm it follows exactly.
Inspect the connector and wiring for corrosion or damage, especially near the transmission.
Check the shift cable adjustment and confirm the lever on the transmission reaches each position fully.
Measure the sensor signals in each position and compare them with the manufacturer table.
Confirm the sensor itself is adjusted per the manufacturer procedure.

Clean the connector and repair damaged wiring.
Adjust the shift cable, or replace it if loose or damaged.
Readjust the transmission range sensor using the specified procedure.
Replace the sensor if its signals stay wrong after adjustment.
Clear the codes, then confirm the engine cranks only in park and neutral and that the reverse lights and gear indicator work.

Why won't the engine crank with this code sometimes?

Because the computer only allows cranking when the sensor confirms park or neutral. A wrong signal can block starting, and sometimes the engine will only start in neutral.

Is this code dangerous?

It can be if it lets the engine start in gear or disables the reverse lights, so repair it soon and always check the selector position before starting.
