What it means

The transmission control module (TCM) has found that pressure control solenoid A behaves as if it is stuck on, so hydraulic pressure does not change as the computer commands. Depending on the transmission design, pressure may stay high and cause harsh shifts, or stay low and cause slipping.

Symptoms5

  • Very harsh shifts or clunks when engaging gears.
  • Slipping or delayed shifts on some designs.
  • Transmission entering limp mode and staying in one gear.
  • A jolt when stopping or shifting into Drive.
  • Check engine light on.

Possible causes5

  • Pressure control solenoid mechanically stuck from debris or metal particles.
  • Dirty or old transmission fluid.
  • Short in the control wire holding the solenoid in one state on some designs.
  • Sticking pressure regulator valve in the valve body.
  • Fault in the driver circuit inside the transmission computer (less common).

How to diagnose5

  1. Check fluid condition and look for debris in the pan and filter.
  2. On the scan tool, watch commanded pressure and solenoid current, and note whether shifts change when the command changes.
  3. Check the circuit for a short to ground or to power.
  4. Have line pressure measured with a gauge in several operating conditions and compare it with the manufacturer specification.
  5. If pressure stays fixed despite command changes and good wiring, the solenoid or valve body is stuck.

How to fix6

  1. Repair any wiring short.
  2. Change the transmission fluid and filter to remove debris.
  3. Replace the stuck pressure control solenoid.
  4. Clean or replace the valve body if the pressure regulator is sticking.
  5. Find the source of metal particles, as it may reveal internal wear that needs repair.
  6. Clear the codes, run the shift relearn if needed, then road test and confirm the code does not return.

Repair cost

In Saudi riyals; the highlighted part is the expected range for this fault.

The cost is low when a wiring short or a replaceable solenoid is the cause, and rises if a valve body or repair of internal wear is needed.

Prices are rough estimates for common cars at independent workshops and vary with the car and the source of the part.

Frequently asked questions

Why do symptoms differ between cars with the same code?

Some pressure solenoids raise pressure when energized and others lower it, so the same code can cause harsh shifts in one car and slipping in another.

What usually makes the solenoid stick?

Mostly debris and metal particles in old fluid, so it is wise to change the fluid and filter along with the solenoid and to find the source of heavy debris.
