Pressure Control Solenoid A Malfunction
What it means
The transmission control module (TCM) has detected a fault in pressure control solenoid A, the solenoid that regulates the hydraulic fluid pressure the clutches inside the transmission work with. With this fault the transmission often enters limp mode, so shifts become harsh or it stays in one gear.
Symptoms4
- Harsh shifts and clunks when engaging a gear or shifting.
- Transmission stuck in one gear with weak acceleration (limp mode).
- Delayed engagement when shifting into Drive or Reverse.
- Check engine light on, with a transmission warning on some vehicles.
Possible causes6
- Corroded or oil-soaked transmission connector.
- Broken or chafed wire in the pressure control solenoid circuit.
- Failed pressure control solenoid coil.
- Low or dirty transmission fluid that hinders solenoid movement.
- Damaged internal harness or valve body.
- Transmission computer fault (less common).
How to diagnose5
- Read all codes; more specific codes such as P0746 or P0748 show whether the fault is electrical or performance related.
- Check the transmission fluid level and condition.
- Inspect the transmission connector and harness for corrosion or oil.
- Measure the pressure control solenoid resistance and compare it with the manufacturer specification.
- On the scan tool, watch the commanded and actual solenoid current if the tool displays them.
How to fix6
- Top up the fluid, or change it and the filter if it is dirty.
- Clean the connector and repair damaged wiring.
- Replace the pressure control solenoid if its readings are out of specification.
- Repair or replace the internal harness or valve body if they are damaged.
- Reprogram or replace the computer after the causes above are ruled out.
- Clear the codes, then road test and confirm smooth shifts and no returning code.
Repair cost
In Saudi riyals; the highlighted part is the expected range for this fault.
The cost is low when fluid, a connector or a wire is the cause, and rises if the pressure solenoid, a solenoid pack or the valve body must be replaced.
Prices are rough estimates for common cars at independent workshops and vary with the car and the source of the part.

Frequently asked questions
Why are shifts so harsh after the code appeared?
On many transmissions, limp mode raises pressure to maximum to protect the clutches from slipping, so shifts stay harsh until the fault is fixed.
Does the whole transmission need replacing?
Rarely. Most cases are solved by repairing wiring or the connector or replacing the solenoid; a valve body or rebuild is needed only if internal damage is found.
This guide is for information only and does not replace an inspection by a qualified technician. If the fault involves brakes, steering, engine temperature, electrics or refrigerant, do not attempt the repair yourself.
