What it means

The transmission control module (TCM) has found that the engaged gear behaves as if shift solenoid A is always on, even when the computer commands it off. This can cause starting off in the wrong gear, shifting into an unexpected gear or harsh engagement.

Sluggish take-off because the transmission starts in a gear higher than first.
Unexpected shifts or a shift into the wrong gear.
Harsh clunk on some shifts or on engagement.
Transmission entering limp mode.
Check engine light on.

Possible causes5

Shift solenoid A mechanically stuck open because of debris.
Dirty transmission fluid carrying metal particles.
Short in the control wire keeping the solenoid energized on some designs.
Sticking shift valve linked to it in the valve body.
Fault in the driver circuit inside the transmission computer (less common).

How to diagnose5

On a scan tool, watch commanded gear, actual gear and gear ratio, and note which gear appears instead of the commanded one.
Unplug the solenoid or transmission connector and see whether the behavior changes, to tell an electrical stick from a mechanical one.
Check the circuit for a short that keeps the solenoid energized.
Check fluid condition and look for debris in the pan and filter.
Check service information for the solenoid apply chart in each gear, and compare the actual gear with it.

Repair any wiring short.
Change the transmission fluid and filter to remove debris.
Replace shift solenoid A or the solenoid pack.
Clean or replace the valve body if its shift valve is sticking.
Clear the codes, run the shift relearn if needed, then road test and confirm take-off in first gear.
