What it means

The transmission control module (TCM) has found that the shift solenoid A circuit is open, shorted or has incorrect resistance. The computer usually stops using this solenoid and puts the transmission in limp mode in a fixed gear until the fault is repaired.

Symptoms4

Transmission stuck in one gear after the code sets.
Weak take-off and high engine speed on the highway.
A harsh engagement into gear.
Check engine light on; the transmission may work normally again after a restart until the fault repeats.

Corroded, loose or oil-soaked transmission connector.
Broken, chafed or grounded wire between the computer and the transmission.
Open or internally shorted shift solenoid A coil.
Internal harness damaged by heat or vibration.
Fault in the solenoid power feed or the transmission computer ground.
Fault in the driver circuit inside the computer (less common).

How to diagnose5

Read all codes; if several solenoids show electrical codes at once, start with the shared connector and power feed.
Visually inspect the connector and external harness for oil, corrosion or chafing.
Measure solenoid A coil resistance at the connector and compare it with the manufacturer specification.
Check the circuit with a multimeter for opens or shorts to ground or power.
If the reading at the connector is wrong, inspect the internal harness and solenoid after removing the pan.

How to fix6

Clean the connector and replace its seal or damaged pins.
Repair the broken or chafed wire and secure the harness.
Replace shift solenoid A or the solenoid pack if its resistance is out of specification.
Replace the internal harness if it is damaged.
Repair the computer power or ground, and replace the computer only after the above is ruled out.
Clear the codes, then road test through all gears and confirm the code does not return.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the transmission sometimes work normally after a restart?

The computer rechecks the circuit at every start, so with an intermittent fault the transmission works normally until the fault is detected again and limp mode returns.

Should I just replace the solenoid?

No. Measure resistance and check the connector and wiring first; many of these codes are caused by an oil-soaked connector or chafed wire rather than the solenoid itself.
