Shift Solenoid A Performance or Stuck Off
What it means
The transmission control module (TCM) has found that the actual gear ratio does not change as it should when shift solenoid A is commanded, as if the solenoid is not working hydraulically although its circuit looks fine. The result is missing gears or wrong shifts, usually caused by the fluid, the solenoid or the valve body.
Symptoms5
- No shift into one or more gears, or skipping a gear.
- Slipping or delay on some shifts.
- Transmission entering limp mode.
- High engine speed at higher road speeds.
- Check engine light on.
Possible causes6
- Low, dirty or wrong-type transmission fluid.
- Shift solenoid A clogged with debris or stuck closed.
- Clogged transmission filter.
- Sticking shift valve linked to it in the valve body.
- Internal leak from the seals of the clutch the solenoid feeds.
- Worn clutch for the affected gear (less common).
How to diagnose5
- Check fluid level, color and smell.
- On a road test, watch commanded gear, actual gear and gear ratio on a scan tool to find the affected shift.
- Command solenoid A with the scan tool and note whether the gear changes as expected.
- Inspect the pan and filter for debris or metal particles.
- Have the removed solenoid bench tested, or its hydraulic circuit pressure measured if a test port exists.
How to fix5
- Top up with the correct fluid, or change it and the filter.
- Replace shift solenoid A or the solenoid pack if it is proven to stick.
- Clean or replace the valve body if its shift valve is sticking.
- Repair internal leaks or the worn clutch if proven.
- Clear the codes, run the shift relearn if needed, then road test through all gears.
Repair cost
In Saudi riyals; the highlighted part is the expected range for this fault.
The cost is low when a fluid change or a new solenoid fixes it, and rises if a valve body or internal clutch repair is needed.
Prices are rough estimates for common cars at independent workshops and vary with the car and the source of the part.

Frequently asked questions
If the wiring is fine, why does the code appear?
This code means the solenoid is not producing the expected hydraulic effect, not necessarily an electrical fault; it may be clogged or stuck, or the fluid may be low.
Will cleaning the solenoid fix it?
A stuck solenoid sometimes frees up after cleaning and a fluid change, but replacement is more reliable because debris tends to return if its source is not addressed.
This guide is for information only and does not replace an inspection by a qualified technician. If the fault involves brakes, steering, engine temperature, electrics or refrigerant, do not attempt the repair yourself.
