Shift Solenoid A Malfunction
What it means
The transmission control module (TCM) has detected a fault in shift solenoid A, one of the solenoids that direct fluid to the clutches to select a gear. The transmission usually enters limp mode and stays in a fixed gear, and which gears are affected depends on each manufacturer's design.

- Transmission stuck in one gear, often a middle gear, with weak take-off.
- No shift into some gears, or shifts at unusual times.
- Harsh or delayed shifts.
- High engine speed on the highway because upper gears are not reached.
- Check engine light on.

- Broken or chafed wire in the shift solenoid A circuit.
- Failed shift solenoid coil.
- Low or dirty transmission fluid hindering solenoid movement.

- Read all codes and look for a more specific code such as P0751 or P0753 that defines the fault type.
- Check service information to learn which gears solenoid A controls in your transmission.
- Check fluid level and condition.
- Measure solenoid resistance and compare it with the manufacturer specification, and inspect the connector and wiring.
- Command the solenoid with the scan tool if possible, and listen for its click or watch the circuit status.

- Top up the fluid, or change it and the filter if it is dirty.
- Clean the connector and repair damaged wiring.
- Replace shift solenoid A, or the solenoid pack if the solenoid is part of one.
- Repair the internal harness or valve body if they are damaged.
- Reprogram or replace the computer after the causes above are ruled out.
- Clear the codes, then road test through all gears and confirm the code does not return.
