What it means

Shown as a gear with a thermometer inside, red or amber depending on the make, this light means the transmission fluid temperature has gone above the safe limit. It is normal for it to glow for a few seconds at key-on; if it comes on while driving, stop safely, put the transmission in Park and let the engine idle until it goes out, or switch off if the owner manual says so.

How to diagnose5

Stop safely, shift to Park, and follow the owner manual: many cars advise leaving the engine running until the light goes out.
Do not continue heavy driving; wait until the light goes out before moving off gently.
Look for leaks under the car, and check the fluid level if the car has a dipstick, using the manufacturer method.
At the workshop: read transmission control module (TCM) codes and the actual fluid temperature with a scan tool.
Check the fluid color and smell, and inspect the cooler and its lines.

Reduce the load and avoid heavy driving until the transmission cools.
Fix the leak and top up with the recommended fluid.
Change the transmission fluid and filter, if fitted, per the manufacturer schedule.
Clean or replace the cooler, and replace the temperature sensor if confirmed faulty.
Repair the torque converter or rebuild the transmission if internal slipping is confirmed.
Road-test after the repair and confirm the temperature stays stable and the light stays off.

Frequently asked questions

Should I switch off the engine as soon as the light comes on?

It depends on the make. Many manuals advise stopping in Park with the engine running so fluid keeps flowing through the cooler. Check the owner manual for your car.

The light came on climbing a mountain and then went out. Is something wrong?

The temperature may simply have risen under load. If it happens again in normal driving, or with slipping or a burning smell, have the fluid and cooler checked.

How often should transmission fluid be changed in hot weather?

Manufacturers treat extreme heat and heavy traffic as severe conditions and usually give shorter intervals for them. Follow the severe-service schedule in the owner manual.
