Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance
What it means
A reading is arriving from the transmission fluid temperature sensor, but it does not behave as the computer expects, such as not rising after a long drive, jumping implausibly, or climbing higher than expected. The cause can be the sensor itself or a truly abnormal fluid temperature.
Symptoms4
- Check engine light on.
- Harsh or unusual shifts.
- Torque converter clutch not locking in some cases.
- Fluid temperature on a scan tool not rising, or rising too much.
Possible causes5
- A weak or skewed fluid temperature sensor.
- Truly high transmission fluid temperature from low fluid, a clogged fluid cooler or hard driving.
- Fluid staying cold because of a faulty engine thermostat or a fault in the transmission warm-up system on vehicles that have one.
- Extra resistance in the connector or wiring changing the reading.
- Internal slipping generating extra heat in the transmission.
How to diagnose5
- Compare transmission fluid temperature with engine coolant temperature after a long soak, then watch it rise during a road test.
- Check the transmission fluid level and condition; burnt or low fluid runs hotter.
- Inspect the transmission fluid cooler and lines for blockage or leaks.
- Check the engine thermostat, since a cold engine can keep the fluid cold.
- Measure sensor resistance at different temperatures and compare with the manufacturer table.
How to fix5
- Correct the transmission fluid level, or change it if burnt.
- Flush or replace the transmission fluid cooler if it is clogged.
- Replace the engine thermostat if it is stuck open.
- Repair the connector or wiring, or replace the fluid temperature sensor.
- Clear the codes and watch the fluid temperature on a long drive to confirm normal behavior.
Repair cost
In Saudi riyals; the highlighted part is the expected range for this fault.
The cost is low for a fluid correction or connector repair, and higher when the fluid cooler or an internal sensor must be replaced, or when there is internal slipping.
Prices are rough estimates for common cars at independent workshops and vary with the car and the source of the part.

Frequently asked questions
Does this code mean the fluid is really overheating?
It can. Before replacing the sensor, check the fluid level, condition and cooler, because real overheating damages the transmission.
What does the engine thermostat have to do with it?
On many cars the transmission fluid exchanges heat with engine coolant, so if the engine stays cold from a stuck thermostat, the fluid may not warm up as the computer expects.
