What it means

The transmission control module (TCM) has found that the shift solenoid D circuit is open, shorted or has out-of-range resistance. The computer stops using the solenoid and usually puts the transmission in limp mode, so some gears are lost until the fault is repaired.

Symptoms4

Upper gears or some shifts missing, with high engine speed.
Transmission held in a fixed gear after the code sets.
A clunk on engagement or on some shifts.
Check engine light on.

Possible causes6

Corroded transmission connector, or oil or water inside it.
Broken or chafed wire in the solenoid D circuit.
Open or shorted shift solenoid D coil.
Damaged internal harness inside the transmission.
Fault in the solenoid power feed or computer ground.
Fault in the driver circuit inside the computer (less common).

How to diagnose5

Read all codes, and note any electrical codes for other solenoids such as P0763.
Inspect the connector and external harness for oil, corrosion or chafing.
Measure solenoid D coil resistance and compare it with the manufacturer specification.
Check the circuit with a multimeter for opens or shorts to ground or power.
Inspect the internal harness and solenoid after removing the pan if the reading at the connector is wrong.

How to fix6

Clean and dry the connector, and replace its seal or damaged pins.
Repair the broken or chafed wire.
Replace shift solenoid D or the solenoid pack based on test results.
Replace the internal harness if it is damaged.
Repair the power feed or ground, and replace the computer only after the above is ruled out.
Clear the codes, then road test through all gears.

Frequently asked questions

Is replacing solenoid D alone enough?

If testing proves its coil is bad and the wiring is fine, yes; but on some transmissions the solenoid is not sold separately and the whole solenoid pack is replaced.

Why is top speed reduced with this code?

Limp mode blocks shifts into some upper gears, so engine speed rises and road speed is limited; this is a deliberate protection.
