What it means

The transmission control module (TCM) has found that the shift solenoid C circuit is open or shorted, or its current does not match what is expected. The computer usually stops using the solenoid and puts the transmission in limp mode with limited gears.

Symptoms4

Transmission held in a fixed gear or a limited set of gears.
High engine speed at higher road speeds.
Harsh shifts after the code sets.
Check engine light on.

Corroded or oil-soaked transmission connector.
Broken or chafed wire in the solenoid C circuit.
Open or shorted shift solenoid C coil.
Damaged internal harness inside the transmission.
Fault in the solenoid power feed or computer ground.
Fault in the driver circuit inside the computer (less common).

How to diagnose5

Read all codes, and note any electrical codes for other solenoids such as P0758.
Inspect the connector and external harness for oil or corrosion.
Measure solenoid C coil resistance and compare it with the manufacturer specification.
Check the circuit for opens or shorts with a multimeter.
Inspect the internal harness and solenoid after removing the pan if the reading at the connector is wrong.

Clean the connector and replace its seal or damaged pins.
Repair the broken or chafed wire.
Replace shift solenoid C or the solenoid pack based on test results.
Replace the internal harness if it is damaged.
Repair the power feed or ground, and replace the computer only after the above is ruled out.
Clear the codes, then road test through all gears.

Frequently asked questions

Can the solenoid be tested without opening the transmission?

On most cars, yes; resistance is measured at the external transmission connector, and if the reading is wrong there, the pan is removed to check the solenoid and harness directly.

Why do electrical codes for several solenoids sometimes appear after an engine wash?

Water can get into the transmission or computer connector and cause false readings, and drying and cleaning the connector may solve the problem.
