What it means

The transmission control module (TCM) has detected incorrect electrical values in the shift solenoid B circuit, such as an open, a short or out-of-range resistance. The computer then holds the transmission in a backup gear in limp mode to protect it.

Symptoms4

Transmission stuck in one gear with weak take-off.
No upshifts to higher gears and high engine speed.
A clunk when engaging Drive from a stop.
Check engine light on; the fault may appear after the transmission warms up.

Possible causes6

Oil in the transmission connector or corroded pins.
Broken or chafed wire in the solenoid B circuit.
Open or shorted shift solenoid B coil.
Damaged internal harness inside the transmission.
Weak solenoid power feed or computer ground.
Fault in the driver circuit inside the computer (less common).

How to diagnose5

Read all codes, and note whether other solenoids show electrical codes, such as P0753.
Visually inspect the connector and external harness.
Measure solenoid B resistance cold and then hot, and compare it with the manufacturer specification.
Check the circuit between the computer and the connector for opens or shorts with a multimeter.
Inspect the internal harness and solenoid after removing the pan if the reading at the connector is wrong.

How to fix6

Clean the connector and replace its seal if fluid is leaking into it.
Repair the broken or chafed wire.
Replace shift solenoid B or the solenoid pack based on test results.
Replace the internal harness if it is damaged.
Repair the power feed or ground, and replace the computer only after the above is ruled out.
Clear the codes, then road test until the transmission is hot and confirm the code does not return.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the code appear only when the transmission is hot?

Heat expands wires and pins, so an open or short in a weak coil or harness shows up when hot; that is why the solenoid is also tested hot.

Can I drive until the repair?

Short distances and gently, avoiding highways and heavy loads, because limp mode raises engine speed and limits acceleration.
