What it means

The transmission control module (TCM) has found that the shift from second to third gear did not happen correctly; it was late, slipped or the gear ratio changed unexpectedly. This is usually noticed when accelerating to moderate speeds.

Symptoms5

  • Late shift into third with high engine speed.
  • Slipping or a sudden RPM flare during the shift.
  • A clunk or harsh shift into third.
  • Car drops back to second or enters limp mode.
  • Check engine light on.

Possible causes6

  • Low or old transmission fluid.
  • Weak or sticking shift solenoid linked to this shift.
  • Sticking shift valve in the valve body.
  • Worn clutch that applies third gear.
  • Internal leak from the seals or rings of the third gear clutch circuit.
  • Incorrect speed sensor readings (less common).

How to diagnose5

  1. Check fluid level, color and smell.
  2. Read all codes; third gear ratio codes such as P0733 or solenoid codes guide the diagnosis.
  3. Watch the shift time and input and output speeds on a scan tool while accelerating.
  4. Use service information to find the solenoid and clutch responsible for the shift, and test the solenoid.
  5. Have the third gear clutch circuit pressure measured, and inspect the pan and filter for friction material.

How to fix6

  1. Top up with the correct fluid, or change it and the filter.
  2. Update the computer software and run the shift relearn if available.
  3. Replace the responsible shift solenoid if proven faulty.
  4. Repair or replace the valve body if the shift valve is sticking.
  5. Repair the third gear clutch or rebuild the transmission if wear is proven.
  6. Clear the codes, then test acceleration through all shifts and confirm the code does not return.

Repair cost

In Saudi riyals; the highlighted part is the expected range for this fault.

The cost is low when fluid, a solenoid or a software update is the cause, and rises sharply if the third gear clutch or the transmission needs a rebuild.

Prices are rough estimates for common cars at independent workshops and vary with the car and the source of the part.

Frequently asked questions

Can fluid alone be the cause?

In some cases, yes; low or old fluid weakens clutch apply pressure and causes slipping. If the fluid is burned, wear has likely happened and deeper inspection is needed.

Why does engine speed flare between second and third?

The old clutch releases before the new one applies firmly, so the engine briefly spins without load; this is a sign of slipping that needs repair.
