3-4 Shift Malfunction
What it means
The transmission control module (TCM) has found that the shift from third to fourth gear did not happen correctly. On four-speed transmissions, fourth is usually the overdrive highway gear, so the fault shows as high engine speed and higher fuel use on highways.

- Slipping or a sudden RPM flare during the shift.
- Repeated shifting back and forth between third and fourth.

- Have the fourth gear clutch circuit pressure measured, and inspect the pan for friction material or metal.

- Top up with the correct fluid, or change it and the filter.
- Update the computer software and run the shift relearn if available.
- Replace the responsible shift solenoid if proven faulty.
- Repair or replace the valve body if the shift valve is sticking.
- Repair the fourth gear clutch or rebuild the transmission if wear is proven.
- Clear the codes, then road test on a highway and confirm the shift into fourth and no returning code.
