Transmission Overtemperature Condition
What it means
This is a Ford, Lincoln and Mercury code; the same number can mean something different on other makes. The transmission fluid temperature sensor recorded a temperature above the allowed limit. The cause may be hard use such as towing and extreme heat, or a real fault that raises temperature, and hot fluid greatly shortens transmission life.
Models covered: Ford (and Lincoln/Mercury) models with electronically controlled automatics, mainly around 1996–2008.

- Changed shift timing or harsh shifts.
- Burnt fluid smell.
- Slipping or delayed shifts if the fluid is damaged.

- Hard use such as towing a trailer, heavy loads or long traffic jams in extreme heat.
- Low or degraded transmission fluid.
- Blocked transmission cooler or lines, or a dirty radiator front.
- Torque converter clutch not applying, so slipping heats the fluid.
- Internal clutch slipping.
- Faulty fluid temperature sensor or wiring giving a false high reading.
How to diagnose5
- Reduce load and stop to let the transmission cool if the warning appears while driving.
- Check fluid level, color and smell using the method in the manufacturer manual.
- Compare fluid temperature on a scan tool with engine temperature and conditions; an implausible reading points to the sensor.
- Check the fluid cooler, its lines and the radiator front for blockage.
- Watch torque converter slip when lock-up is commanded to confirm it works.
How to fix5
- Top up or change the fluid and filter to the recommended specification.
- Clean the radiator front and repair blocked cooler lines or cooler.
- Add an auxiliary fluid cooler if the vehicle tows regularly.
- Replace the temperature sensor if proven wrong, or repair converter lock-up.
- Repair the transmission internally if it slips, then clear the code and monitor temperature.
