Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Circuit Performance
What it means
This is a Ford, Lincoln and Mercury code; the same number can mean something different on other makes. The computer commanded torque converter clutch (lock-up) apply, but the actual slip did not match what it expected. It is roughly equivalent to generic P0741, and the cause can be the fluid, the solenoid, the valve body or the converter itself.
Models covered: Ford (and Lincoln/Mercury) models with electronically controlled automatics (e.g. 4R70W, 4R100, 5R55), mainly around 1996–2008.
Symptoms5
- Check engine light on.
- Shudder at moderate speeds as lock-up applies.
- Higher engine RPM on the highway and higher fuel use.
- Engine stalling when stopping if lock-up stays applied.
- Higher transmission temperature.
Possible causes5
- Low, burnt or old transmission fluid.
- Failed torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid.
- Worn or sticking lock-up control valves in the valve body.
- Worn torque converter clutch.
- Wiring or connector fault at the solenoid.
How to diagnose5
- Check transmission fluid level and condition.
- Watch converter slip on a scan tool (engine speed versus input speed) when lock-up is commanded.
- Check TCC solenoid resistance and wiring against the manufacturer specification.
- Road-test and note any shudder or missing lock-up.
- If the circuit is good, have line pressure and the valve body checked at a transmission shop.
How to fix5
- Change the transmission fluid and filter to the recommended specification.
- Repair the wiring or connector.
- Replace the TCC solenoid.
- Repair the valve body if it is worn.
- Replace the torque converter if its clutch is worn, then clear the code and test lock-up.
Repair cost
In Saudi riyals; the highlighted part is the expected range for this fault.
Repairs start with a fluid change or TCC solenoid and rise to the top of the range for valve body work or a new torque converter.
Prices are rough estimates for common cars at independent workshops and vary with the car and the source of the part.

Frequently asked questions
What causes the shudder with P1744?
When the converter clutch does not apply smoothly it slips and grabs in turn, which feels like driving over a rough road.
Does P1744 harm the transmission?
Yes, over time. Slipping heats the fluid and speeds up internal wear, so have it checked soon.
