What it means

Usually shown as a car with an exclamation mark, amber or red depending on the make and how serious the fault is, this light varies widely in symbol and messages between makes; it means the control system has detected a fault in the hybrid system, such as the high-voltage battery, the inverter, the electric motor or their cooling. The car may reduce power, run on the engine only or ask you to stop. A brief glow when the system starts that then goes out is normal.

Faulty hybrid system sensors or control module.

How to diagnose5

Read the message on the display, and if it asks you to stop, pull over in a safe place.
Check the owner's manual for what the light and its color mean on your car.
Check the inverter coolant level at its own reservoir if the manual shows where it is, and never touch any orange cable.
Check the battery cooling intake inside the cabin for dust or items blocking it.
At a hybrid specialist: read codes and test battery cell voltages and temperatures, the coolant pump and the inverter.

Charge or replace the 12-volt battery if it is weak.
Clean the high-voltage battery cooling intake and fan.
Top up the inverter coolant with the specified type and replace its pump if faulty.
Repair weak battery modules or replace the whole battery at a specialist.
Repair the inverter or electric motor at a dealer or specialist, then clear codes and confirm the ready indicator appears and the light is off.

Can I drive to the workshop?

If the light is amber and the car drives normally, drive gently to a hybrid specialist. If it is red or a message asks you to stop, pull over and call a tow truck.

Can I check the system myself?

Only check the coolant level and the battery cooling intake. Do not touch orange cables or high-voltage parts; they are very dangerous even with the car switched off.

Does it always mean the big battery is dead?

No. Many cases come from overheating, the coolant pump or a weak 12-volt battery, so do not replace the high-voltage battery without a proper diagnosis.
