Lost Communication With Hybrid Powertrain Control Module
What it means
On hybrid vehicles, the hybrid powertrain control module coordinates the engine, the electric motor and the high-voltage battery. This code is set in another module when messages from this module stop arriving over the network. The vehicle may enter limp mode or fail to reach ready-to-drive mode.
Symptoms4
- Check engine light and hybrid system warning light on.
- Vehicle does not enter ready mode or does not start.
- Reduced power or limp mode.
- Several warning lights at once and the scan tool cannot reach the module.
Possible causes6
- Weak or loose 12-volt low-voltage battery.
- Blown module power fuse or a faulty relay.
- Poor module ground or a corroded connector.
- Open or shorted network wiring.
- Water in the module or its connector.
- Internal module failure.
How to diagnose5
- Check the low-voltage battery and measure its voltage, since it powers the control modules on a hybrid.
- Read codes from all modules and note which ones lost contact with the hybrid module.
- Try to connect directly to the module with a scan tool; if it does not respond, check its fuse, relay, power and ground.
- Measure the network line resistance and compare it with the manufacturer specification.
- Inspect the module connector for water or corrosion without touching any part of the high-voltage circuit (orange cables).
How to fix5
- Charge or replace the low-voltage battery and clean its terminals.
- Replace the faulty fuse or relay.
- Repair the ground, connector or network wiring.
- Replace and program the module if proven faulty with good power and network wiring.
- Clear codes in all modules, confirm the vehicle reaches ready mode and the code does not return.
Repair cost
In Saudi riyals; the highlighted part is the expected range for this fault.
The cost is low for a low-voltage battery or a fuse, and reaches the upper end if the module must be replaced and programmed at a hybrid specialist.
Prices are rough estimates for common cars at independent workshops and vary with the car and the source of the part.

Frequently asked questions
Could the high-voltage battery be the cause?
Usually not. This code is about communication with the module, and the most common causes are the low-voltage battery, power supply or wiring. High-voltage battery codes such as P0A80 point to a different problem.
Can any workshop fix this?
Any workshop can check the battery and fuses, but work near the high-voltage circuit needs a technician trained on hybrids with proper insulated tools.

What was wrong? (optional)
This guide is for information only and does not replace an inspection by a qualified technician. If the fault involves brakes, steering, engine temperature, electrics or refrigerant, do not attempt the repair yourself.
