What it means

This code appears on Samsung inverter split wall units such as WindFree and Digital Inverter. It means the outdoor board tried to start the compressor but the start failed or rotation did not continue. The unit retries several times, then stops and shows the code. The same code can mean something else on other brands.

E461 shows and the compressor does not run.
A short hum or vibration from the outdoor unit without cooling.
Only the outdoor or indoor fan runs.
It may appear after a quick restart or after a power cut.

Failed IPM or outdoor PCB.
Mechanically seized compressor or damaged windings.
Unequalized pressure on a quick restart, or a refrigerant overcharge.
Low supply voltage at the moment of start-up.

How to diagnose5

Switch off the breaker and wait several minutes for pressures to equalize, then restart.
After discharge, a technician checks the compressor plug and its three wires.
Measure compressor winding resistance, confirm the windings are balanced and check insulation to the compressor body.
Test the IPM per the Samsung service manual and measure voltage during start-up.
Check the refrigerant charge and system pressures.

How to fix6

Secure the compressor plug and replace a damaged wire.
Fix weak supply with a voltage protector or connection repair.
Correct an overcharge (licensed technician).
Replace the outdoor PCB if the IPM is proven faulty.
Replace the inverter compressor if seized or its windings are damaged, with vacuum and a weighed charge.
Run the unit and confirm a smooth start every time.

Does E461 mean the compressor is finished?

Not necessarily. Many cases are wiring, the outdoor board or a quick restart; the compressor is only condemned after its windings and insulation are measured.

Why wait before restarting?

The compressor needs a few minutes for system pressure to equalize; starting before that makes the start harder and can set the code without a real fault.
