What it means

This code appears on Samsung refrigerators with a digital display and an ice maker when the ice maker temperature sensor reads open or illogical. Ice making usually stops or becomes irregular, while the fridge and freezer keep cooling normally. The same code can mean something else on other brands, and its meaning may differ between some Samsung series.

8E flashes on the temperature display.
The ice maker makes no new cubes, or makes them only now and then.
Cubes may come out stuck together or not fully frozen.

Ice or frozen water around the sensor after a water leak in the ice compartment.
Loose or corroded connector in the sensor circuit.
Failed sensor, which on some models is part of the ice maker assembly.
Damaged wire between the ice maker and the control board.
Control board fault (rare).

How to diagnose5

Make sure the freezer or ice compartment door closes well and the ice bucket is seated correctly.
Unplug the fridge for a few minutes, then restart it.
Check the user manual for how to switch the ice maker off and on, or test it, on your model.
A technician unplugs the fridge before removing the ice maker, then measures the sensor and compares the reading with the manufacturer table.
The technician checks the connectors and wiring and looks for ice or frozen water around the sensor.

How to fix6

Close the door properly and reseat the ice bucket.
Clear ice buildup around the ice maker with a manual defrost if needed.
Clean or tighten a corroded connector and repair any damaged wire.
Replace the sensor, or the whole ice maker assembly if the sensor is built into it.
Check the control board only if the sensor and wiring are good.
After a day of running, confirm new cubes are made and the code does not return.
