Diesel Particulate Filter Restriction - Soot Accumulation
What it means
The engine computer found that the soot load in the diesel particulate filter (DPF) has passed its limit, and automatic burn-off cycles (regeneration) have not cleaned it. The engine usually limits power to protect the filter and turbocharger, and delaying treatment can make cleaning impossible and require a new filter.
Symptoms5
- DPF warning light or check engine light on.
- Clear loss of power with the engine in limp mode.
- Higher fuel consumption.
- Cooling fan running or raised idle speed from repeated regeneration attempts.
- Burning smell or black smoke in some cases.
Possible causes6
- Frequent short, low-speed trips that never let regeneration finish.
- Regeneration repeatedly interrupted by shutting the engine off.
- Faulty exhaust temperature sensor, DPF pressure sensor or its hoses preventing proper regeneration.
- Excess soot from a faulty EGR valve, injectors or turbocharger.
- Engine oil that does not meet the specification, adding ash to the filter.
- Filter full of ash at the end of its service life.
How to diagnose5
- Read all stored codes and fix sensor, EGR or injector codes first, since they cause soot buildup or block regeneration.
- Use a scan tool to check the estimated soot and ash loads and the pressure difference across the filter.
- Inspect the pressure sensor hoses and temperature sensors to confirm the readings are valid.
- Check the regeneration history and failed attempts if the scan tool shows them.
- Check the engine oil level and type; a rising level can mean fuel dilution from repeated regeneration.
How to fix6
- Drive on a highway at a steady speed long enough, if the soot load is low and the manufacturer allows it.
- Have a forced regeneration done with a scan tool at a workshop.
- Fix the cause of excess soot or failed regeneration, such as sensors, the EGR valve or injectors.
- Have the filter cleaned off the vehicle if regeneration fails.
- Replace the DPF if it is full of ash or cracked, then reset the filter values with a scan tool.
- Clear the codes and confirm the pressure difference returns to normal.
Repair cost
In Saudi riyals; the highlighted part is the expected range for this fault.
The cost is low when a forced regeneration at the workshop is enough, rises for off-vehicle filter cleaning, and reaches the upper end when a genuine filter is replaced.
Prices are rough estimates for common cars at independent workshops and vary with the car and the source of the part.

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive with this code?
Carefully and only a short distance to a workshop. Driving on with a clogged filter raises exhaust back pressure, strains the turbo, and can push soot past the point where the computer allows regeneration.
Will highway driving clean the filter?
It may if the restriction is just starting, but once the engine is in limp mode a forced regeneration with a scan tool is usually needed.
Is removing the DPF an acceptable fix?
No. Removing it breaks emissions rules, harms the environment and can fail a periodic inspection. The right fix is to cure the cause and regenerate or clean the filter.
This guide is for information only and does not replace an inspection by a qualified technician. If the fault involves brakes, steering, engine temperature, electrics or refrigerant, do not attempt the repair yourself.
