What it means

The secondary air pump should run only briefly after a cold start and then shut off. The engine computer found that the pump is still running, or air is still being pumped into the Bank 1 exhaust, after it was commanded off. The most common cause is a stuck pump relay.

Check engine light on.
Constant humming or blowing from the air pump even after the engine warms up.
In some cases the pump keeps running after the engine is shut off and drains the battery.
A lean code may appear because extra air reaches the oxygen sensor.
The pump overheats and fails if it keeps running.

Pump relay contacts welded closed.
Relay control wire shorted to ground, keeping the relay energized.
Pump supply wire shorted to a constant voltage source.
Switching valve stuck open, making it look to the computer as if air is still flowing.
Control circuit fault inside the engine computer (rare).

How to diagnose5

Listen to the pump after the engine warms up; if it runs constantly, the fault is usually electrical.
Pull the pump relay; if the pump stops at once, the relay or its control circuit is the cause.
Swap in an identical known-good relay from the fuse box and test again.
Check the relay control wire for a short to ground.
If the pump is actually off, check the switching valve, which may be stuck open.
