What it means

The engine computer has detected a fault in the secondary air injection system, which pumps fresh air into the exhaust for a short time after a cold start so the catalytic converter heats up quickly. The fault raises cold-start emissions but usually does not affect driving.

Loud whining or roaring from the air pump at cold start, or no pump sound at all.
Failed emissions test.
Driving is usually unaffected.

Listen for the pump during the first minute after a cold start; it should run and then stop.
Check the fuse and relay and confirm voltage reaches the pump when commanded.
Command the pump with a scan tool and watch the upstream oxygen sensor; it should read lean while air is injected.
Inspect hoses and valves for cracks, moisture or exhaust residue.
Check the control solenoid and vacuum hoses if fitted.
