What it means

The secondary air injection system pumps air into the exhaust for a short time after a cold start to heat the catalytic converter quickly. The engine computer found, usually from the oxygen sensor reading, that the Bank 1 switching valve lets air or exhaust gas pass when it should be closed.

Check engine light on.
Blowing or hissing noise from the air pump or valve area.
A lean code may appear because extra air reaches the oxygen sensor.
Later failure of the air pump from exhaust gas and moisture flowing back into it.

Carbon buildup or corrosion inside the valve holding it open.
Damaged valve diaphragm or internal spring.
Faulty vacuum or electric control valve that operates the switching valve in some designs.
Damaged or misrouted vacuum hoses keeping the valve open.
Faulty secondary air pressure sensor on vehicles equipped with one (less common).

How to diagnose5

Read all stored codes, noting other secondary air codes such as P0410 or P2444.
With the engine warm, disconnect the hose between the pump and valve and check for exhaust gas coming out; if it does, the valve is not closing.
Inspect the vacuum hoses and their control valve if fitted.
Use a scan tool to command the system on and off and watch the oxygen sensor response.
Check the pump for moisture or carbon, since a valve stuck open may have damaged it.

Replace the vacuum control valve if it is faulty.
Replace the stuck switching valve.
Replace the secondary air pump if exhaust backflow has damaged it.
