Lack of HO2S11 Switch - Sensor Indicates Rich

Car Fault Codes Ford Emissions & exhaust

Typical cost SAR 100 to 1,500

What it means

This is a Ford, Lincoln and Mercury code; the same number can mean something different on other makes. The upstream oxygen sensor HO2S11 on bank 1 stayed rich and did not switch lean even though the computer tried cutting fuel. The cause may be real excess fuel or a contaminated sensor reading high.

Models covered: Ford (and Lincoln/Mercury) models, mainly around 1996–2004.

Symptoms4

  • Check engine light on.
  • Clearly higher fuel use.
  • Fuel smell or black smoke from the exhaust at times.
  • Rough idle.

Possible causes6

  • Leaking or stuck-open injector.
  • High fuel pressure from a faulty pressure regulator.
  • Wrong reading from the MAF sensor or the coolant temperature sensor.
  • EVAP purge valve stuck open, adding extra fuel vapor.
  • Engine oil diluted with fuel.
  • Contaminated or failed oxygen sensor reading high.

How to diagnose5

  1. Watch the HO2S11 signal and bank 1 fuel trims; a high reading with large negative trims confirms a real rich condition.
  2. Measure fuel pressure and check the regulator.
  3. Compare the coolant temperature reading with the actual engine temperature.
  4. Check whether the EVAP purge valve is stuck open.
  5. Test sensor response by briefly adding air; if the reading does not drop, the sensor is contaminated.

How to fix5

  1. Replace the EVAP purge valve if it is stuck.
  2. Repair the fuel pressure regulator or the leaking injector.
  3. Replace the temperature sensor or clean the MAF based on the test.
  4. Change the engine oil if it is diluted, after fixing the cause.
  5. Replace the oxygen sensor if proven faulty, then clear the code and confirm fuel trims return to normal.

Repair cost

In Saudi riyals; the highlighted part is the expected range for this fault.

Repairs start with a purge valve or a simple sensor, and rise for injectors or an oxygen sensor.

Prices are rough estimates for common cars at independent workshops and vary with the car and the source of the part.

Frequently asked questions

Does a rich mixture harm the catalytic converter?

Yes. Extra fuel overheats the catalytic converter and can damage it over time, so do not leave P1132 for long.

Can the oxygen sensor get contaminated?

Yes. Coolant entering combustion or unsuitable silicone products can contaminate the sensor and make it read wrong.
