What it means

The transmission control module (TCM) needs engine speed to control shifts and torque converter clutch lockup. It has detected a problem receiving this signal, whether it arrives by a direct wire or over the module network (CAN), depending on the vehicle design.

Check engine light on.
Harsh or delayed shifts.
Transmission in limp mode.
Torque converter clutch not locking, and on some vehicles the tachometer may stop working.

A fault in the crankshaft position sensor or its circuit, the source of the engine speed signal.
An open or short in the wire carrying the speed signal from the engine computer to the TCM.
A fault in the module network (CAN) or its connectors.
A weak battery or poor ground causing signal errors.
A fault in the engine computer or TCM (rare).

How to diagnose5

Read the engine computer codes; crankshaft sensor codes such as P0335 mean you should start there.
Compare engine speed in the engine computer data and the TCM data; they should match.
Look for module communication codes and test the CAN network if any are present.
Inspect the wiring and connectors between the two modules using the manufacturer wiring diagram.
Measure battery voltage and inspect ground connections.

Repair the crankshaft sensor circuit, or replace the sensor if faulty.
Repair the damaged wire or connector between the modules.
Repair the module network fault.
Update or replace a module only after ruling out other causes.
Clear the codes and confirm engine speed appears in the TCM and normal shifting returns.

Why does an engine sensor set a transmission code?

Because the TCM usually gets engine speed from the crankshaft sensor signal through the engine computer, so if that source fails, the transmission loses it too.

Can the engine stall with this code?

If the cause is the crankshaft sensor, the engine may stumble or stall, so check the engine codes first and do not delay the repair.
