What it means

The engine computer has seen the signal voltage from camshaft position sensor A stay above its normal limit for a set time. This is usually caused by an open signal or ground wire, or a signal wire shorted to a voltage source, so normal pulses do not reach the computer.

Check engine light on.
Long cranking, or a no-start on some vehicles.
Intermittent stalling.
Reduced power and, at times, variable valve timing (VVT) disabled.

Open in the sensor signal wire or ground wire.
Loose or corroded terminal in the connector.
Signal wire shorted to a supply wire or other voltage source in the harness.
Internal sensor failure.
Faulty engine computer (rare).

How to diagnose5

Read stored codes and watch the sensor signal voltage on a scan tool while cranking.
Inspect the connector for loose, corroded or pushed-back terminals.
Measure resistance of the ground and signal wires between the sensor and the engine computer to rule out an open.
Check for unexpected voltage on the signal wire with the sensor unplugged, which indicates a short to voltage.
If the circuit is sound and voltage stays high, replace the sensor.

Repair or tighten loose connector terminals and clean the connector.
Repair the broken wire or separate and insulate the short to voltage.
Repair a corroded shared ground point.
Replace the camshaft position sensor if it is proven faulty.

How can a broken wire cause high voltage?

On many systems the computer pulls the signal line up internally and the sensor pulls it down with each pulse. If the wire or ground is open, the line simply stays high.

Short distances with care if the engine runs acceptably, but stalling or a no-start can happen, so repair it soon.
