What it means

The engine computer has detected a fault in the fuel pump primary circuit, which on most vehicles is the control circuit the computer uses to switch the fuel pump relay or pump control module. If this circuit fails, the pump may not run, so the engine is hard to start or stalls while driving.

How to diagnose5

Listen for the pump when the ignition is turned on, and use a scan tool to command the pump or relay on if possible.
Check the fuse and relay, and try a matching known-good relay in its place.
Measure the voltage across the relay coil when the computer commands it on.
Check continuity of the control wire between the computer and the relay and its isolation from ground and voltage sources.
If the vehicle has a fuel pump control module, check its power, ground and its own codes.

How to fix6

Replace the failed pump relay or fuse after finding what caused it to fail.
Clean corroded fuse box terminals.
Repair the open or grounded wire in the control circuit.
Replace the fuel pump control module if it is proven faulty.
Replace the pump if it is proven to draw excessive current and blow the fuse.
Clear the codes, then start the engine, road test and confirm the code does not return.
