Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low
What it means
The engine computer has detected that actual fuel pressure is lower than the desired pressure. It is most often seen on engines with a fuel pressure sensor, such as direct injection and diesel engines. Low pressure leans out the mixture and can cause severe power loss or stalling.
Symptoms5
- Check engine light on.
- Loss of power, especially when accelerating or climbing hills.
- Long or hard cranking, or stalling while driving.
- Stumbling or surging at high speed.
- Limp mode in some cases.
Possible causes6
- Clogged fuel filter.
- Weak in-tank fuel pump, or low voltage reaching it.
- Faulty fuel pressure regulator.
- Worn high-pressure pump or a faulty pump control valve on direct injection and diesel engines.
- Faulty fuel pressure sensor reading lower than actual.
- Leaking or kinked fuel lines, or driving with a nearly empty tank.
How to diagnose5
- On a scan tool, compare desired and actual fuel pressure at idle and under acceleration.
- Measure low-side pressure from the in-tank pump with a gauge and compare it with the manufacturer specification.
- On port-injected systems, compare the pressure sensor reading with the gauge to confirm the sensor is accurate.
- Measure the voltage reaching the fuel pump while it runs, and check the relay and ground point.
- Inspect the fuel lines for leaks or kinks, and check when the fuel filter was last replaced.
How to fix6
- Fill the tank if fuel is low, and replace the fuel filter if it is clogged or overdue.
- Repair any leaking or kinked fuel line, or poor pump wiring.
- Replace the pressure regulator or fuel pressure sensor if proven faulty.
- Replace the in-tank fuel pump if its pressure or flow is weak.
- Replace the high-pressure pump on direct injection and diesel engines if it is proven weak after the low side checks out.
- Clear the codes, road test under load and confirm desired and actual pressure match.
Repair cost
In Saudi riyals; the highlighted part is the expected range for this fault.
The cost is low when a fuel filter or wiring is to blame, rises for an in-tank pump, and reaches the upper end when the high-pressure pump is replaced.
Prices are rough estimates for common cars at independent workshops and vary with the car and the source of the part.

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive with this code?
Carefully and only a short distance. Low pressure can make the engine stall suddenly while driving or accelerating, and the lean mixture raises combustion temperatures.
Can low or poor-quality fuel cause it?
Yes. Often driving on a nearly empty tank strains the pump, and contaminated fuel clogs the filter. Start with the filter and a pressure test before replacing pumps.
Why is this code more common on direct injection and diesel engines?
Because they run at very high pressure and monitor it constantly with a sensor, so any weakness in the low- or high-pressure pump is detected quickly.
