What it means

The engine computer has seen the rail pressure sensor signal voltage fall below the lowest possible value, a reading that cannot be real pressure. This is usually caused by a lost reference voltage to the sensor, a signal wire shorted to ground or a failed sensor, and the engine may run in protection mode or be hard to start.

Check engine light on.
Hard starting, or no start on some vehicles.
Loss of power or reduced-power protection mode.
Occasional stumbling or stalling while driving.

Open reference voltage wire or damaged connector.
Signal wire shorted to ground.
Failed rail pressure sensor.
Short in the shared reference circuit caused by another failed sensor.
Engine computer fault (rare).

How to diagnose5

Review other codes; low-voltage codes for sensors sharing the reference, such as the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor, point to a shared reference fault.
Check the connector is fully seated and free of corrosion.
Measure reference voltage at the connector with the ignition on and compare it with the manufacturer specification.
Check the signal wire for a short to ground after disconnecting the sensor and computer by the correct procedure.
If the reference and wiring are sound, the sensor is the suspect.

How to fix5

Reconnect or clean the connector, and repair a broken reference wire.
Repair the wire shorted to ground.
Unplug the sensors sharing the reference one by one, and replace the one pulling the voltage down.
Replace the rail pressure sensor if proven failed, or the whole rail if the sensor is not separable.
Clear the codes and confirm the reading makes sense at start-up and while driving.

Frequently asked questions

Does the code mean fuel pressure is really low?

Not necessarily. The code is about the electrical signal voltage; real low pressure has its own code, such as P0087.

Why did codes for other sensors appear with it?

Because many sensors share one reference voltage from the computer, so a short in it affects them all at once.
