What it means

The engine computer has seen fuel pressure drop slightly faster than it expects, so it concluded there is a small leak in the system. This code is most common on high-pressure diesel engines and some direct injection engines. A small leak may cause no symptoms now, but it can grow over time.

Faint fuel smell around the engine.
Longer cranking than usual after the car has been parked for a while.
Slightly higher fuel consumption.

Minor leak at a high-pressure line fitting or a seal.
Internal leak in one or more injectors, or excessive injector return flow.
Leaking pressure relief valve on the fuel rail, on systems that have one.
Leak at the high-pressure pump or pressure regulator.
Faulty fuel pressure sensor giving an inaccurate reading.

How to diagnose5

Clean old oil and fuel residue off the engine, then check the fittings and lines after a short run with the engine off.
On a scan tool, watch how fast pressure drops after shutdown, and compare it with manufacturer data if available.
Have an injector return-flow test done.
Check the pressure relief valve and its return line.
Verify the fuel pressure sensor reading.

Replace the leaking seal, fitting or line.
Replace any injector whose return flow exceeds the allowed limit.
Replace the pressure relief valve if it is proven to leak.
Repair or replace the high-pressure pump or regulator, or the pressure sensor if proven faulty.
Clear the codes, and confirm pressure holds after shutdown and the code does not return.

Carefully and for short trips if there is no fuel smell or visible leak. If you smell fuel, stop and have the car towed, because the leak can suddenly get worse.

Why does the car crank longer after sitting?

Because pressure leaks away while the car is parked, so the system needs longer to build it back up at start-up.

What is the difference between P0094 and P0093?

P0094 means a small leak that develops slowly, while P0093 means a large, dangerous leak. Ignoring a small leak can let it become a large one.
