What it means

The engine computer controls the fuel pressure regulator electronically and checks the result through the pressure sensor. This code is set because actual pressure does not follow the computer's commands as expected, so it fluctuates or lags behind the desired pressure. It is most common on direct injection and diesel engines.

On a scan tool, watch desired and actual pressure and the regulator command, and note when pressure lags or fluctuates.
Measure low-side pressure and confirm it meets specification before condemning the regulator.
Check the fuel filter and fuel quality, looking for water or debris.
Wiggle the regulator wiring and connector while monitoring to catch an intermittent fault.
Verify the fuel pressure sensor reading.

Replace the fuel filter, and bleed air from the system on diesel engines if needed.
Repair the regulator wiring or connector.
Replace the pressure regulator or control valve if it sticks.
Replace the high-pressure pump if it is proven weak or the regulator is part of it.
