What it means

Shown as a car with a padlock or key inside or beside it, usually red, this light belongs to the immobilizer, which only lets the engine start with a programmed key. Slow flashing with the car locked and switched off is normal and shows the system is armed. If it stays on or flashes quickly after you insert the key or press the start button, the key has not been recognized; the symbol and behavior vary by make.

How to diagnose5

Check that the flashing only happens with the car locked and off; that is normal and needs no repair.
Try the spare key: if the car starts with it, the fault is usually the main key or its battery.
With a smart key, hold the key near the start button or the spot shown in the owner manual, then try to start.
Check the car battery voltage and terminals.
At the workshop: read immobilizer codes and test the reader antenna and key with a suitable tool.

Replace the key fob battery with the correct type.
Charge or replace the car battery if weak.
Have the key reprogrammed by the dealer or an approved key programmer.
Replace a damaged key and have a new one programmed.
Repair or replace the reader antenna or immobilizer module as the tests indicate.
After the repair, confirm the car starts with every key and the light goes out after starting.

Can I start the car if the smart key battery is dead?
