What it means

This code appears on older Bosch front-load washing machines (e.g. Maxx, Logixx) when water leaves the drum more slowly than allowed. It is the older equivalent of E18 on newer models, and the most common cause is a partly blocked pump filter. The same number can mean something else on other brands.

F18 shows before or during the spin stage.
A little water is left in the drum after the program ends.
Laundry is wetter than usual because the spin did not finish.
The pump sounds louder than usual or runs in bursts.

A drain pump filter partly blocked with lint or hair.
A drain hose that is kinked, too long or raised above the recommended height.
A partly blocked drain outlet or sink trap.
A worn pump impeller or a weak drain pump.
Too much foam slowing draining and spinning.

How to diagnose5

Unplug the machine and wait for the water to cool after a hot wash.
Open the lower filter cover with a tray and towels, drain the water in stages, then clean the filter and its housing.
Check the drain hose route and outlet height against the installation guide, and clean the sink trap if the hose connects there.
Review the detergent type and dose if you see a lot of foam in the drum.
If draining is still slow, a technician unplugs the machine before opening it and checks the pump and its internal hose.

How to fix5

Clean the drain pump filter regularly and close it firmly.
Straighten or shorten the drain hose and clear the drain outlet.
Use less detergent and a type made for front-loaders.
Have the technician replace the drain pump if it is weak or its impeller is damaged.
Run a rinse and spin program and confirm water drains at normal speed.
