What it means

This code appears on older Bosch front-load washing machines (e.g. Maxx, Logixx) and means water is entering but so slowly that it does not reach the required level in the set time. It is the older equivalent of E17 on newer models. Some models finish the program once water arrives, and the same number can mean something else on other brands.

F17 shows or flashes during the fill stage.
The start of the program takes noticeably longer.
A weak trickle of water instead of the usual strong flow.
The program may stop if no water arrives at all.

Possible causes5

A partly open tap or low water pressure in the house.
A partly blocked mesh filter at the inlet hose end, common with hard water.
A slight kink in the inlet hose reducing the flow.
Scale in the inlet valve or a valve that does not open fully.
A faulty water level (pressure) sensor or a blocked sensor tube delaying the full signal.

How to diagnose5

Unplug the machine, open the tap fully and compare its pressure with other taps.
Close the tap, disconnect the inlet hose and clean scale and sand from the mesh filter.
Make sure the hose is not kinked and does not run under the machine or behind furniture.
Reconnect, start the program and see whether the flow has improved and the code has cleared.
If flow is still weak with good pressure, a technician unplugs the machine before opening it and checks the inlet valve, the level sensor and its tube.

How to fix6

Open the tap fully or fix the house pressure problem.
Clean the mesh filter, or replace the hose if scale is heavy.
Reroute the hose to remove the kink.
Have the technician replace the inlet valve if it does not open fully.
Have the level sensor replaced or its tube cleaned if confirmed as the cause.
Restart the program and confirm a normal fill without the code.

Frequently asked questions

Is F17 on my old washer the same as E17 on newer models?

Yes, it is the older equivalent. Bosch models such as Maxx and Logixx show F17 for essentially the same fault, and checks start with the tap and hose filter.

Why does the code come up more in summer?

In many homes roof-tank pressure drops at peak times, and with a partly blocked filter the fill becomes slower than the allowed time.

Will the washer finish the wash despite the code?

On some models the code flashes and the machine carries on once water arrives, but repeated warnings mean the flow is weak and should be fixed before the program stops completely.
