Water Supply Error (Water Not Filling)

What it means

This code appears on newer Bosch front-load washing machines and means the machine did not take in the required amount of water within the set time at the start of the program. The program stops and waits until the cause is fixed; most cases come down to the tap, the inlet hose or its filter. On older Bosch models (e.g. Maxx, Logixx) the same fault shows as F17, and the same number can mean something else on other brands.

Symptoms4

• The program stops a few minutes after starting and E17 shows on the display.
• No sound of water flowing into the machine, or only a weak trickle.
• The drum stays dry or holds only a little water.
• Detergent stays in the drawer without being rinsed in.

Possible causes6

• The water tap is fully or partly closed, or the house water supply is off.
• The inlet hose is kinked or crushed behind the machine.
• The small mesh filter at the end of the inlet hose is blocked with sand or scale.
• Low water pressure, especially with a roof tank at peak times.
• The Aquastop leak protection valve at the hose end has tripped or failed (on models that have one).
• A faulty water inlet valve or water level (pressure) sensor.

How to diagnose5

1. Unplug the machine, then make sure the tap is fully open and other taps in the house have normal pressure.
2. Pull the machine out a little and check that the inlet hose is straight and not crushed.
3. Close the tap, place a bowl and a towel, disconnect the hose at both ends and clean the mesh filter with a soft brush.
4. If the hose has an Aquastop box at the tap end, check its indicator window if fitted; red means it has tripped and the hose needs replacing.
5. If the fault remains with good pressure, a technician unplugs the machine before opening it and checks the inlet valve coils and the water level sensor and its tube.

How to fix6

1. Open the tap fully and restart the program.
2. Reroute the inlet hose, or replace it if it is kinked or cracked.
3. Clean the mesh filter in the inlet hose and refit it firmly.
4. Replace the Aquastop hose if its indicator is red or it is confirmed faulty.
5. Have the technician replace the water inlet valve or the water level sensor if faulty.
6. Run a short program and confirm water enters normally and the code does not return.
