What it means

This code appears on Samsung inverter split wall units such as WindFree and Digital Inverter. It means the discharge sensor recorded a temperature on the compressor outlet pipe above the safe limit, so the unit stopped the compressor to protect it. The most common cause is low refrigerant or poor refrigerant flow, and repeated episodes shorten compressor life. The same code can mean something else on other brands.

How to diagnose5

Switch off the breaker and let the compressor cool for at least half an hour; clear around the outdoor unit.
Look at the joints under the indoor unit and at the outdoor unit for oil spots.
A technician measures pressures and pipe temperatures against Samsung specification.
If the charge is low, locate the leak with a detector, soap bubbles or a nitrogen pressure test.
Check the electronic expansion valve and its coil, and measure and check the mounting of the discharge sensor.

Wash the condenser and fix a weak outdoor fan.
Refit the discharge sensor, or replace it if it reads wrongly.
Repair the leak, then evacuate and recharge by weight to the nameplate (licensed technician only).
Replace the electronic expansion valve, its coil or a blocked strainer.

Run the unit for a long period in the heat and confirm stable discharge temperature with no code.

Does E416 always mean low refrigerant?

It is the most common cause, but a blocked expansion valve, a dirty condenser or a loose sensor can also set it, so pressures are measured before any refill.

Is a gas top-up enough?

No. Low refrigerant means a leak that a licensed technician must find and repair; then the system is evacuated and charged by weight, or the code returns and the compressor suffers.
