What it means

This code appears on LG front-load and top-load washing machines and means the main board detected motor current above the safe limit, so it shut the motor down to protect it and itself. A very heavy load or a mechanical drag can trigger it, but repeated codes usually point to a short in the motor or its wiring, or a fault in the motor drive circuit on the board. The washer stops; the same code can mean something else on other brands.

• CE shows and the washer stops suddenly, often at the start of spin.
• A click or hum from the motor may be heard before it stops.
• The code comes back after a restart with the same load.
• In a few cases there is a faint burning smell.

• A very heavy load, or water-logged clothes that did not drain well.
• A mechanical drag on the drum such as a trapped object or worn bearings.
• Loose or corroded motor connectors, or chafed motor wiring.
• Shorted stator windings.
• A fault in the motor drive (power module) circuit on the main board.
• Unstable household supply voltage.

How to diagnose5

1. Unplug the washer at once if you smell burning, and do not restart it before it is checked.
2. Otherwise unplug it for a few minutes, drain the water, reduce the load and restart.
3. With the washer unplugged, turn the drum by hand; it should turn smoothly without rubbing.
4. If the code repeats, a technician unplugs the washer before opening it, checks the motor connectors and wiring, and measures the windings and insulation against the manufacturer specification.
5. If the motor and wiring are good, the fault is usually in the motor drive circuit on the main board.

How to fix6

1. Reduce the load and make sure the washer drains well before spinning.
2. Remove any mechanical drag and replace worn bearings.
3. Repair the motor connectors or chafed wiring.
4. Replace the stator if its windings are proven shorted.
5. Replace the main board if the motor drive circuit is proven faulty.
6. Run a full wash and spin cycle and confirm it finishes without the code returning.
