Discharge Temperature Too High
What it means
This code appears on Toshiba residential split air conditioners when the fault code is read with the remote check function. It means the discharge temperature sensor on the compressor outlet line recorded a temperature above the safe limit. The outdoor unit stops the compressor to protect it from overheating, and may restart once it cools, then stop again if the cause remains. The same code can mean something else on other brands, and Toshiba commercial units use different codes.
Models covered: Toshiba residential split air conditioners (RAC) that show a two-character check code through the remote check function; Toshiba commercial units use different codes.
Symptoms4
- Cooling gets gradually weaker before the fault.
- The indoor unit lamps blink and code 1E is found on check.
- The outdoor unit stops after running for a while, especially in the heat.
- Oily marks at pipe joints when there is a leak.
Possible causes5
- Low refrigerant from a leak, the most common cause.
- A faulty electronic expansion valve or a restriction in the circuit.
- A partly closed service valve after installation or service.
- A dirty condenser or weak outdoor fan combined with high outdoor temperatures.
- A false reading from the discharge sensor because it has come off the pipe.
How to diagnose6
- Read the code with the remote check function: press and hold the check button, then step through the codes with the timer button until the indoor unit beeps continuously; the code shown then is the fault. Steps vary slightly by remote, so follow the owner's manual.
- Turn the unit off at the breaker and do not restart it again and again, as this can add damage.
- Make sure the outdoor unit is clean, its fan turns and it has enough clearance.
- The technician measures operating pressures and pipe temperatures against the manufacturer specification to detect undercharge.
- The technician searches for leaks at joints and coils and checks the service valves and electronic expansion valve.
- The technician confirms the discharge sensor is seated on the pipe and reading correctly.
How to fix6
- Wash the condenser and repair the outdoor fan if weak.
- Open the service valves fully.
- Refit the discharge sensor on the pipe or replace it.
- Have a licensed technician repair the leak, evacuate the system and recharge by weight.
- Replace the electronic expansion valve if proven faulty.
- Run the unit, watch discharge temperature and confirm the code does not return.
Repair cost
In Saudi riyals; the highlighted part is the expected range for this fault.
The cost is low for dirt or a sensor, and rises for a leak repair with recharge or a new electronic expansion valve.
Prices are rough estimates including the part and the technician’s fee, and vary with brand, model and part source.

Frequently asked questions
Is a refrigerant top-up enough?
No. If there is a leak the fault will return; the leak must be found and repaired first, then the system charged by weight by a licensed technician.
Why not keep restarting?
The compressor runs very hot, and repeated restarts with the cause still there can destroy it and make the repair far more expensive.
Can heat alone cause 1E?
Heat makes it worse, but a clean, healthy unit is designed to work in the heat, so the code usually points to low refrigerant, dirt or another fault.

What was wrong? (optional)
This guide is for information only and does not replace an inspection by a qualified technician. If the fault involves brakes, steering, engine temperature, electrics or refrigerant, do not attempt the repair yourself.
