What it means

This code appears on Toshiba residential split air conditioners when the fault code is read with the remote check function. It means the discharge temperature thermistor (TD) on the compressor outlet line in the outdoor unit is open or shorted. The outdoor unit stops the compressor because it cannot protect it from overheating without this reading. The same code can mean something else on other brands, and Toshiba commercial units use different codes.

How to diagnose5

Read the code with the remote check function: press and hold the check button, then step through the codes with the timer button until the indoor unit beeps continuously; the code shown then is the fault. Steps vary slightly by remote, so follow the owner's manual.
Switch off at the breaker for several minutes, restart and note when the fault returns.
Switch off at the breaker before opening any panel; the outdoor unit and its inverter board keep a dangerous charge for a while after switch-off.
The technician checks the sensor connector on the board and traces the lead along the discharge line for burns or breaks.
The technician measures the sensor resistance against the manufacturer table, then checks the board if the sensor is good.

Dry, clean and reseat the connector.
Repair the lead and secure it away from hot pipes.
Replace the discharge thermistor with the correct part and fix it firmly to the pipe.
Replace the outdoor control board if its circuit is proven faulty.

Code 19 means the discharge sensor or its lead has failed, while 1E means the sensor works and is actually reading a high discharge temperature.

Can the unit run without the sensor?

No. The sensor protects the compressor from overheating, and bypassing it can destroy the compressor.

Is the repair expensive?

Usually not. The thermistor is fairly cheap; the cost only rises if the outdoor board is at fault.
