Brake Switch
What it means
This is a Nissan-specific code; the same number can mean something different on other makes. It means the engine computer did not receive a plausible brake switch (stop lamp switch) signal while driving, such as no signal for a very long time. On some models with electronic throttle the computer limits throttle opening as a precaution, so acceleration is weak, and the brake lights may not work, which is a safety risk.

How to diagnose5
- Have someone press the brake and watch the rear and high-mount brake lights.
- Check the brake light fuse.
- Watch the brake switch signal on a scan tool while pressing and releasing the pedal.
- Inspect the switch adjustment, plastic plunger and connector at the pedal.
- Check that voltage reaches the switch and passes through it when pressed, per the wiring diagram.

- Replace the blown fuse and find out why it blew.
- Readjust the stop lamp switch per the service manual.
- Repair the damaged connector or wire.
- Replace the stop lamp switch if confirmed faulty.
- Clear the codes and confirm the brake lights, normal acceleration and cruise control all work.
