What it means

This is a Toyota-specific code; the same number may mean something else on other makes. The engine computer logs it when starting takes longer than normal or the engine stalls right after starting; it records the problem but does not name the failed part. The cause must be found in fuel, ignition, air or starter cranking speed.

1. Read the freeze frame data stored with the code; engine temperature and RPM at the time show whether it is a cold or hot start problem.
2. Test the battery and the cranking speed.
3. Measure fuel pressure, then check how well the system holds pressure after shutdown.
4. Compare the coolant temperature reading with outside air temperature after an overnight sit.
5. Inspect the throttle body, spark plugs and MAF sensor.

3. Replace the coolant temperature sensor or spark plugs based on the tests.
