VVT System Malfunction (Bank 1)

What it means

This is a Toyota-specific code; the same number can mean something different on other makes. The engine computer commanded a change in camshaft timing through the VVT-i system, but the actual timing did not match the target or stayed stuck. The most common causes are low or dirty engine oil and a sticking oil control valve (OCV).

• Timing belt or chain jumped out of its correct position.

How to diagnose5

1. Check the oil level and condition first, and ask when it was last changed.
2. Use a scan tool to compare target and actual cam angle, and see whether timing changes when the tool commands the OCV.
3. Remove and test the OCV: the spool should move freely when powered per the Toyota procedure, with no sludge on it.
4. Inspect and clean or replace the OCV oil screen if the engine has one.
5. If oil and the valve are good, verify the timing marks on the belt or chain.

1. Change the engine oil and filter with the grade Toyota specifies.
2. Clean or replace the VVT oil screen where fitted.
3. Replace the oil control valve if it is stuck or slow.
4. Replace the VVT-i controller or correct the timing belt or chain if proven faulty.
5. Clear the codes and road test to confirm actual timing follows the target.
