VTEC System Malfunction

What it means

This is a Honda- and Acura-specific code; the same number can mean something different on other makes. The engine computer did not see the right response from the VTEC system when it commanded it on. VTEC uses oil pressure to switch valve lift at higher RPM, so low or dirty oil, the VTEC solenoid or the VTEC oil pressure switch are the usual causes.

1. Check the engine oil level and condition first, and correct the level.
2. Check the VTEC solenoid resistance and wiring against the manufacturer specification.
3. Remove the VTEC solenoid and inspect its screen and gasket for blockage or damage.
4. Watch the VTEC oil pressure switch status with a scan tool while the system is commanded.
5. Look for oil leaks at the solenoid gasket.

How to fix5

1. Top up the oil, or change it with the recommended oil and viscosity and a new filter.
2. Clean or replace the VTEC solenoid screen and gasket.
3. Repair the damaged wiring or connector.
4. Replace the VTEC oil pressure switch or the VTEC solenoid based on the test.
5. Clear the code and road-test with acceleration into the VTEC range.
