What it means

This is a Honda- and Acura-specific code; the same number can mean something different on other makes. The engine computer commanded the VTC system to advance intake cam timing, but the actual timing did not reach the target. It is close in meaning to generic P0011, and the causes are usually oil, the VTC oil control solenoid, the VTC actuator (cam gear) or the timing chain.

Models covered: Honda and Acura models with i-VTEC (VTC), mainly around 2002–2010 (e.g. Accord 2.4, CR-V 2.4, Civic Si).

Compare actual and desired cam angle with a scan tool while driving.
Command the VTC solenoid with a scan tool and watch the cam angle and idle change.
Check the solenoid screen, resistance and wiring against the manufacturer specification.
Listen for a cold-start rattle and inspect the chain tensioner if suspected.

Is a cold-start rattle related to P1009?

It can be. A worn VTC actuator on some Honda engines rattles briefly on cold start, which a workshop should confirm.

Is P1009 the same as P0011?

The meaning is close, since both concern intake cam timing, but P1009 is a Honda code and is read per the Honda manual.

Is an oil change enough?
