What it means

The engine computer is not receiving a valid signal from camshaft position sensor B on bank 1. On engines with a sensor on each camshaft, sensor B is usually on the exhaust camshaft, so the computer normally disables exhaust cam timing control on this bank.

Symptoms4

Check engine light on.
Reduced power because exhaust cam variable valve timing (VVT) is disabled.
Long cranking on some vehicles.
Occasional slight roughness at idle.

Corroded or loose connector, or oil leaking into it.
Broken or chafed sensor wiring.
Faulty sensor supply or ground.
Damaged tooth wheel read by the sensor on the camshaft.

How to diagnose5

Confirm where sensor B is on this engine from the service manual so it is not confused with sensor A.
Inspect the connector and wiring for oil, corrosion or chafing.
Measure supply voltage and ground at the connector and compare them with the manufacturer specification.
Watch the sensor signal while cranking with a scan tool or an oscilloscope.
If sensors A and B are identical, swap them; if the code moves to P0340, the sensor is faulty.

Repair damaged wiring and fix any oil leak into the connector.
Replace camshaft position sensor B with a matching part.
