Cylinder 5 Injector Circuit Low
What it means
The engine computer has detected lower than expected voltage on the control circuit of the cylinder 5 fuel injector. This usually means an open or grounded wire, a poor connector or an open winding inside the injector, and cylinder 5 may run without fuel or with too much fuel until it is repaired. Cylinder 5 only exists on engines with five or more cylinders, such as V6, inline-six or V8 engines.

- Rough idle and engine shake from a misfire in cylinder 5.
- Loss of power and hesitation on acceleration.
- Higher fuel use or a fuel smell from the exhaust if the injector stays open.
- The misfire code P0305 may be stored with it.

- Open or chafed wire in the injector control circuit, or a wire shorted to ground.
- Open internal winding in the cylinder 5 injector.

- Faulty injector driver inside the engine computer (rare).
How to diagnose6
- Read all stored codes; if other injector circuit codes are present too, look first for a shared supply or harness problem.
- Locate the cylinder 5 injector using the maker's numbering diagram, then inspect its connector and wiring for corrosion, rubbing or heat damage.
- With the key on and the engine off, check for supply voltage at the power side of the injector connector.
- Measure the injector winding resistance and compare it with the manufacturer specification and with the cylinder 6 injector.
- Check the control wire between the injector and the engine computer for continuity and for a short to ground.
- Use an injector test light or an oscilloscope to confirm the computer is sending pulses to the injector.
How to fix6
- Clean and secure the injector connector, and replace damaged terminals.
- Repair the open or chafed wire and route it away from any rubbing point.
- Replace the fuse or relay if supply voltage is missing, and find out why the fuse blew.
- Replace the cylinder 5 injector if its winding is open or its resistance is out of specification.
- Repair or replace the engine computer only after the wiring and injector are confirmed good.
- Clear the codes, then road test and confirm the code does not return.

Can I drive with code P0273?
Only a short distance and gently. Cylinder 5 may get no fuel and misfire, or the injector may stay open and flood it, and either case can damage the catalytic converter.
Where is cylinder 5?
Cylinder 5 is on a V or multi-cylinder engine, and makers number the banks differently: some put odd cylinders on one bank and even on the other, others number one bank first. Check the manufacturer's numbering diagram.
What is the difference between P0273 and P0205?
Both concern the cylinder 5 injector circuit. P0205 means the computer found a general circuit fault, while P0273 specifies that the voltage is lower than expected, which points testing toward an open circuit or a short to ground.
