What it means

The engine computer has detected an electrical fault in the fuel injector circuit for cylinder 5; this code appears on engines with five or more cylinders. The fault usually starves cylinder 5 of fuel and causes a misfire in it.

Engine shaking at idle.
Loss of power and weak acceleration.
Higher fuel consumption.

Corroded or loose cylinder 5 injector connector.
Open or shorted wire in the cylinder 5 injector harness.

Injector power problem from a fuse or relay.

How to diagnose6

Locate cylinder 5 using the service information, because cylinder numbering on V engines differs between manufacturers.
Inspect the cylinder 5 injector connector and wiring, especially near the exhaust or moving parts.
Measure the cylinder 5 injector resistance and compare it with the specification.
Check supply voltage and drive pulses at injector 5 with a noid light or an oscilloscope.
On port-injection engines, swap the cylinder 5 injector with an easily reached injector from another cylinder and see if the code moves.
Do not use an ordinary test light on direct-injection or diesel circuits, because they use high voltage.

How to fix6

Clean or replace the cylinder 5 injector connector.
Repair the damaged wire in the cylinder 5 injector harness and secure it away from heat.
Replace a failed fuse or relay.
Replace the cylinder 5 injector if it is proven faulty; on some engines this requires removing the intake manifold.
Test or replace the engine computer only after ruling out the harness and injector.
Clear the codes, then road test and confirm the code does not return.
