What it means

The engine computer has detected that the fuel injector circuit for cylinder 2 is not behaving correctly electrically, due to an open or short in the wiring or in the injector. This usually starves cylinder 2 of fuel and causes a misfire there that the driver feels as shaking.

Check engine light on, often with misfire code P0302.
Shaking or stumbling at idle and under light acceleration.
Poor performance and hesitation on the accelerator.
Higher fuel consumption.

Corroded or loose cylinder 2 injector connector.
Open or shorted wire for the cylinder 2 injector in the harness.
Damaged internal coil in the cylinder 2 injector.
Loss of injector power from a fuse or relay, usually with other injector codes stored.
Faulty cylinder 2 injector driver inside the engine computer (rare).

How to diagnose6

Inspect the cylinder 2 injector connector for corrosion, a broken lock or loose terminals.
Measure the cylinder 2 injector resistance and compare it with the specification and with a good neighboring injector.
Confirm supply voltage at the cylinder 2 injector connector with the ignition on.
Use an injector noid light or an oscilloscope to confirm drive pulses reach injector 2 while cranking.
On port-injection engines, swap the cylinder 2 injector with the one in cylinder 3; if the code moves to P0203 the injector is faulty.
Do not use an ordinary test light on direct-injection or diesel injector circuits, because they use high voltage.

How to fix6

Clean or replace the cylinder 2 injector connector and reseat it firmly.
Repair the damaged wire in the cylinder 2 injector harness with proper soldering and insulation.
Replace the fuse or relay if injector power is missing.
Replace the cylinder 2 injector if its coil is proven faulty or the code follows it.
Test or replace the engine computer only after the harness and injector are confirmed good.
Clear the codes, then road test and confirm the code does not return.

Can this code damage the engine?

Direct engine damage is unlikely, but incomplete combustion in cylinder 2 sends unburned fuel and air to the catalytic converter and can damage it over time.

Will an injector cleaner fix this code?

No. The code is electrical and concerns the circuit, so cleaning deposits from the injector does not address it.
